Welcome to the winter edition of Mercer Private Wealth e-newsletter, Optimist.

For most of my professional life as an Edmonton-based Wealth Counsellor, weather and mosquitos have been the conversation starters. That was up until March 2020, when all the conversations changed.

I am sure you will agree that the global pandemic has now taken the leading position in many of our conversations with both friends and family. The pandemic has changed the way we approach life. We are shopping differently, socializing differently and looking at our health in different ways, all in connection to this unwelcome virus.

But what about our money? Has this global pandemic changed the way you look at yours?

On behalf of the wealth management teams across the country, I want to pose that question to you today: How has this global health crisis changed the outlook on your wealth?

Are you considering changing your retirement date in connection to COVID? Have your thoughts about global travel shifted now that travel has become more complicated? Have your wishes around personal spending changed? Has your overall anxiety risen in connection to this pandemic, and has that influenced your views on investment risks?

Your Investment Counsel team really wants to know how this ongoing pandemic has impacted your wealth objectives. So for our next conversation, let’s get ready to talk about how your outlook has shifted and how this connects to the management of your wealth.

Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, we can get back to talking about our cars not starting in December and annoying mosquitos on our river valley walks.

Wishing you and your family health and happiness in 2022,

Marshall McAlister, CFA
Private Wealth Counsellor
