Welcome to the summer edition of Mercer Private Wealth’s e-newsletter, Optimist.
We hope everyone is enjoying the warm weather. With the sunshine and vacations that come at this time of year, summer can often give us an opportunity to reflect on our busy lives. The current events in the wider world around us have certainly given us pause for thought.
While we recently provided an overview on inflation in our fall 2021 edition of Optimist, we thought it would be timely for our summer 2022 edition to share a recent article on inflation from our institutional colleagues. “Inflation — Turning Up the Heat” takes a deeper dive into the root causes of the current inflationary surge that has taken hold globally. While addressing the potential transformation of inflation into the more sinister stagflation (and perhaps even recession), this article discusses its global resurgence as being the result of the confluence of and interplay among several factors, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, ongoing supply disruptions and coordinated global monetary stimulus from central bankers to combat the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, if you would like to hear an in-depth discussion on retirement planning research, including the impact of inflation and rising interest rates, we have an interview with Wade Pfau, one of North America’s most prominent retirement researchers. We recently launched our podcast, “Optimistic Thinking,” by sharing Wade’s insights and they are not to be missed. Feel free to share them with anyone who may find the interview of interest, and subscribe to the podcast to ensure you receive future episodes.
