Calgary Office Leader and Growth Leader, Mercer Canada
Brian Brown is a Senior Partner and Canada Regional Offices Leader, representing the following seven offices on the Canadian Leadership Team: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, London, Ottawa and Halifax. Brian's main responsibilities include client satisfaction and client development. In addition, he serves as Client Manager for some of Mercer's largest clients.

Brian's background includes the design and management of traditional and flexible employee benefit programs. Upon graduating from university in 1985, Brian worked with a major insurance company as a financial underwriter where he gained a strong understanding of risk and funding arrangements. In 1990, Brian began his consulting career and has provided advice to a number of major private sector companies in the retail, manufacturing, finance, professional services, mining and energy sectors. Brian has also worked with public utilities, education institutions and non-profit organizations.

Brian earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Western Ontario.




Director of Strategic Research, Investments Business, Mercer Canada
David Zanutto is a Partner of Mercer in our Calgary office, and the Canadian Director of Strategic Research for Mercer's Investments business. David joined Mercer in 1990.

David advises large institutional clients on a wide range of investment matters, including asset-liability modelling, strategic asset allocation, risk management, portfolio structuring and general investment policy issues. He is also responsible for developing our investment-related intellectual capital across Canada.

David is a CFA Charterholder, as well as a Fellow of both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries. He earned an honours bachelor of science in mathematics from Carleton University in Ottawa, and received the Governor General's Award as the top student in his graduating class.


Wealth Business, Mercer Canada
Dave Makarchuk is a Partner of Mercer and leads our Toronto Wealth business. Dave is also a member of the national leadership team. He joined Mercer in 1999.

Dave combines his actuarial and investment expertise to help plan sponsors set their investment policy, resolve asset-liability issues, enhance investment structures and select/evaluate investment managers. Dave advises sponsors of both defined benefit and defined contribution plans, as well as a variety of non-pension institutional funds.

Dave is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and of the Society of Actuaries, as well as a CFA Charterholder. He earned a bachelor of science (actuarial science) and a bachelor of commerce (finance) from the University of Calgary.


Senior Consultant, Mercer Canada
Deanna (Dea) Napen is a partner and senior consultant in the Retirement business in Mercer’s Calgary office. Dea is also the National Sales Leader for our Retirement business in Canada.

Dea is the relationship manager and lead retirement consultant to western Canadian clients in both the public and private sectors. She focuses on the design, funding and accounting for both registered and non-registered pension plans, and works with our retirement consultants across Canada in their business development activities.

Prior to joining Mercer, Dea was the Executive Director of Workforce Risk Strategies in the Workforce Planning and Leadership Secretariat of the Ministry of Citizens' Services in British Columbia. During her tenure at the BC government, Dea was responsible for the strategy and development of BC's workforce planning/projection process.

Before her work with the BC government, Dea was a principal and consulting actuary in the Calgary office of another major consulting firm. During her twenty year career at this firm, she fulfilled several roles including those of client relationship manager and retirement consultant/actuary. She also helped to develop their workforce planning practice for western Canada. In addition, Dea was a member of this firm’s Canadian Privacy Task Force, assisting in the implementation and training related to Canada's privacy legislation.

Dea earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Victoria, with distinction, in mathematics and with an emphasis on probability and statistics. She is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. Dea is also a member of the Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute and the Association of Canadian Pension Managers.


Wealth Business Leader, Mercer Canada
Sabrina Gilani is a principal in Mercer's Investments business in Calgary. Sabrina joined Mercer in 2012.

Sabrina is a member of Mercer’s Canadian Target Date Fund Research Team. She combines her actuarial and investment expertise to advise plan sponsors on a wide range of strategic investment matters relating to defined benefit and capital accumulation plans. These including asset mix allocation, investment structure, performance monitoring, manager search/selection, and investment sensitivity analysis. She is also involved in the governance and plan design of capital accumulation plans.

Sabrina graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2007 with a Bachelor of Mathematics in actuarial science. She is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and an Associate of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, as well as a CFA Charterholder.
